Should young children be responsible for helping out with the chores? Should you assign them kids chores?Almost all parents feel that chores are important for teaching young children responsibility and how to help out with the family. But there is still much debate on how old children should be when they start doing chores and whether or not allowance should be tied to doing the chores.

Parents who think that allowance should be tied to doing chores believe that this teaches children about receiving pay for doing work. The children receive a set amount of money for doing chores. This is easy. You set kids chores, kids receive money. If they don’t do their chores, they don’t get the money. Once the children have the money, they are then taught about financial responsibility…how some money should go towards savings, to charity, or for buying things that they want.

Other parents believe that chores should be performed without monetary reward. Chores should be expected of children because they need to help their family. These parents usually do give their children an allowance…they just don’t think that it should be connected to their chores.

Whether you want to pay an allowance for doing chores or note, children can start doing easy chores from a very young age. Children as young as two are eager to help out around the house. By giving them a set list of chores that they are required to do, you will teach them about responsibility. They will also feel proud that they’ve helped out.

The following list of chores is appropriate for toddlers. Some of them may require adult supervision and assistance, but still offer toddlers a chance to help out. Here are some possible kids chores:

  • Setting/clearing the table. Young children can learn how to set the table and can help clearing the dishes off of the table when the meal is finished. Just make sure that the dishes are not breakable. Accidents do happen.

  • Keep their room clean. Toddlers can take responsibility for their own space and keep their room clean.

  • Feed the pet. Kids love animals and making them responsible for feeding the pet is a great way to have them participate in the care of your pet. Keeping a scoop with the food will help ensure that they are feeding the pets the right amount.

  • Matching socks. When it’s time to fold the laundry, have your child help to match the socks. This also helps to teach them sorting skills that are essential for preschool.

  • Light housework. You’ve probably noticed that your toddler likes to imitate the things that you do. They haven’t learned yet that housework is not enjoyable, so they’ll be happy to help out. Get some child-sized brooms and feather dusters and they can help.

  • Help prepare dinner. There are many things that your child can do to help prepare for dinner—they can wash vegetables for a salad, tear lettuce into smaller pieces, roll meatballs. Just about anything that doesn’t involve knifes or the stove is safe for your child.

Whatever chores you decide to assign to your child, make sure that they receive proper praise for a job well done. A child who starts doing chores early will learn responsibility and the importance of working together. Remember, you can always think about new kids chores.
