People in general tend to look forward at the future. We focus on what we plan to do in the future and look to new challenges. To this extent, we are constantly thinking about what we plan to do tomorrow, or next week.
This constant looking ahead means we miss out on living in the moment, and lose touch with the wonderful events going on in our lives now. To use a well-worn phrase: we forget to pause long enough to smell the roses.
Some simple moments to treasure are:
- The warmth of the sun.
- The music found in laughter.
- A good conversation.
- A kiss with a loved one.
- Spending time with friends.
- A walk in the countryside.
- Trying something completely new.
- Being totally absorbed in a book.
Whatever event is going on around you at any given moment may seem so routine as to escape your notice, so your thoughts may wander off to future plans.
But living in the present moment - no matter how routine you think the activity you’re doing is – can be a beautiful thing. The art of life is to live in the moment, and to make that moment as perfect as you can.
Because yesterday is now the past, and tomorrow is only a vision, you must aim to live today well, which will make every tomorrow a vision of hope and every yesterday a day of happiness.
When you can manage with less on your mind, you can more closely observe the insights and experience the present within any given moment. You can also allow the future to flow more smoothly into your today.
When you look back on your life you will remember the special ‘moments’; what you want to aim for is to have more of them. In fact, what you want to aim for is to have just moments, one after another, instead of living so many days ahead of each day.
Every day is a fresh beginning. It is up to you to make this day - each moment of this day – full of opportunity.
