Sometimes your best efforts to motivate yourself may not be enough to give you the motivation you need to get things done. If you are a major procrastinator, you may find that you need help from friends or family to find the motivation you need to keep going. Just because you are a procrastinator or are extremely unmotivated does not mean you cannot be in business for yourself, it just means you need help.

One thing you should do is attempt to get to the bottom of why it is you cannot seem to get anything done. There is usually a very specific reason why a person is unable to get things done. Below are a few of the more common reasons people don’t get much done.

  • Some people are naturally chronic procrastinators. They just keep putting off things they don’t want to do for as long as possible.

  • Some people are terrified of failure, and find it difficult to do anything for fear of doing something incorrectly. Fear of failure can be paralyzing.

  • Some people have a habit of starting too many projects. They start one project, and before it is finished, they get sidetracked with a new idea.

  • Some people just have no motivation to start. They are bored, tired, or just generally not wanting to do any work.
  • Some people lack planning or organizational skills. They cannot decide where to start or what to do next, and end up getting absolutely nothing done while looking busy.

All of these issues and many more can be solved by getting friends or family to come to your aid. You can enlist the help of those closest to you by asking for help specifically with any areas in which you feel you are lacking. If you’re not sure where you are lacking, ask someone who is very close to you to give you their honest opinion. Don’t argue or be angry for what they tell you. Their opinion is invaluable!

If you are a procrastinator, ask your helper buddy to give you “assignments” that you need to complete each day, and then report your progress to them at the end of the day. If you are afraid of failure, ask your helper to push you to take action, whether you fail or not. If you keep starting projects over and over, work with your helper to choose one project, and ask them to “force” you to stick with that one until it is finished. If you are tired or bored, get your helper to act as a “boss” by looking over your shoulder or constantly calling you to ask how you are getting along at your work. If you are poorly organized, ask your helper to work with you to come up with a step-by-step action plan, and make sure to keep them updated on your progress.

Sometimes friends and family can help you in ways you couldn’t possibly imagine. Just having someone looking over your shoulder and eyeballing your progress could be enough to motivate you to get more done. It’s embarrassing to admit that you have been “at work” all day and you’ve gotten absolutely nothing done!

One last thing to remember, don’t ever berate this person or get angry with them for pushing you or trying to motivate you. Remember, you asked them for their help. Don’t think they are trying to push you too hard or that they are being a slave driver. After all, they are only doing what you asked them to do!
