Feeling of Being Your Own Boss

Posted on January 12th, 2008 by Better Life, under motivation.

Being your own boss means just that, you have to be boss to yourself. Being your own boss doesn’t mean you don’t have a boss to answer to anymore. If you believe that, then you are doomed to fail! You must be your own boss, and you need to be more of a hard-headed jerk than any boss you ever worked for before!

One very lucky thing about being your own jerk boss is that you will always know that your boss isn’t being hard on you because he hates you and just likes being a jerk. You’ll know that he is being hard on you because he wants you to succeed and because he cares about you genuinely! You certainly can’t say that on a lot of jobs.

One unfortunate part of being your own boss is the fact that you are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of your business. Since you are the boss, your actions will directly result in the business making or losing money. Ultimately, even if you hire employees that do a poor job for you or end up stealing from you, the responsibility still rests with you, because you hired them in the first place.

Motivating yourself to get more done can seem like a daunting task. Especially if you work at home, the temptation to read a book or watch television while “taking a break” can be huge. But you can’t allow your employees to get away with behavior like that, can you? Of course not. And whether you’ve realized it before or not, you are your own employee now.

Even if your business is still just a part time side business, you should start thinking of it as a job. You should set certain tasks for yourself to complete each day, and see that you get them done. Don’t let yourself slack off! You wouldn’t let someone you hired do it, so you can’t let yourself do it, either. If you fail to complete the tasks you assign yourself during the day, maybe you should make yourself stay late and finish it. Had a movie to go to with friends after work? Too bad! You should have worked harder during the day instead of taking twelve coffee breaks in ten hours!

Always remember the term “be your own boss.” You’ve probably heard it a thousand times on television and read it in countless magazines and newspapers. It truly is called being your own boss for a reason. Your employees will almost always slack off if you let them, so don’t let yourself! Be your own boss!

A good Boss knows how to keep employees working on right things. A good employee knows how to keep the boss happy.

Being both takes work.

It’s absolutely true that you become the boss of yourself. Although I don’t think you were really serious, you don’t need to be a jerk to yourself in order to get things done. I think the only reason there would be to be a jerk to yourself to stay on top of things is because you don’t like what you’re doing. If you genuinely enjoy what you are doing, you won’t have to struggle as much. The key is finding balance. =)
