Five Amazing Ways To Motivate Yourself

Posted on January 11th, 2008 by Better Life, under motivation, selfimprovement.

One of the biggest challenges facing the self-employed worker is staying motivated. When you work for yourself and you do not have a boss to answer to, you have less incentive to work hard or to keep going. The temptation to slack off can be irresistible when you work for yourself. You may be tempted to take breaks too often, watch television too much, or even take entire days off “just because.”

Motivating yourself is difficult, but its not impossible. There are a few easy tricks that you can use to help keep yourself going when you want to just give up and go to the movies or head to the beach.

1. Way

Make a list of the ten things you want more than anything else in the world and tape it somewhere near your desk where you can see it often. You might even cut some pictures out of magazines or print some out that you find online and tape those up around your desk, or create a bulletin board and tack them to it. Being constantly reminded of what you could have if you made your business a success can be a huge motivator.

2.Way

Find someone in a similar business that has made a huge success of their business write their name on a post-it note and stick that to the front of your monitor or another conspicuous place. If you have one mentor in business that you truly admire and respect, always keep asking yourself, “What would he do right now?” Would Donald Trump or Suze Orman lounge around in their pajamas until 2 PM before even starting to do something productive? No way! Keep yourself constantly reminded of this.

3. Way

Reward yourself when you accomplish more than you thought you could. I you are a writer and your goal for the day is to write 2,000 words, give yourself some nice reward if you manage to surpass your goal by a lot. Tell yourself that if you manage to write 3,000 words in one day, you will buy yourself a new DVD or a new pair of shoes. Knowing that there are small rewards coming can keep you motivated right now.

4. Way

Set small short-term goals. Almost every business owner has long-term goals for their company. They want to make a million dollars per year, or sell 1,000 items per month, or retire by the time they are 45. But you need to set short-term goals for yourself, too. Human beings naturally love seeing results right now. We live in a world of commercials that promise we can lose ten pounds in two days or make $100,000 in one month. We are used to believing that we should be able to see quick results.

So if your long-term goal is to make $1,000,000 per year in five years, break that up into smaller goals. The first year you might try for $50,000. The second year you could go for $100,000. Then try for $250,000 in year three, $500,000 in year four, and finally try for your million dollars in year five. And don’t forget to break your first $50,000 up into months. Don’t think of the $50,000 you need to make in a year, just think of the $2,000 or so you need to make this month.

5. Way

Finally, if all else fails, remember this. If you fail because you tried your hardest and just weren’t able to meet your goals, you still have something to be proud of. If you fail because you were lazy and didn’t work hard enough, you have only yourself to blame. just because you were too lazy to work when you needed to! You’re better than that, and you deserve much, much more.
