Some people just don’t respond well to hope, so I’ve developed a new method of motivating yourself if the traditional methods don’t work. If you’ve tried setting reasonable short-term and long term goals, and you’ve tried all of the methods of picturing all of the things you dream of owning and doing someday but you are still having trouble finding the motivation to keep going, try switching your thinking.

You’ve heard of reverse psychology, right? With reverse psychology, you say the opposite of what you really want in order to get the person you are speaking with to do what you want. For example, if a child does not want to eat his pizza, and you very much want him to, you could say, “I hope you don’t eat all of your pizza, because I’d love to eat it!” If your child is just being rebellious by not eating, he’ll probably pick the pizza up and eat it just to spite you, unless he’s already onto your game.

This method works a little bit like reverse psychology. The theory is that people who don’t respond to positive motivation may respond better to negative motivation. What is negative motivation? Well, with positive motivation, you do things like putting post-it notes everywhere with your goals and dreams written on them, and you cut pictures of your dream home, dream car, and dream vacations all over everywhere so you are constantly reminded of the things you hope to achieve by working hard. With negative motivation, you do the opposite.

What do you most fear in life? There are probably plenty of things that you don’t want to happen, and many of them may actually happen to you if you cannot motivate yourself to do well in your business. Let’s go over a few things that might happen to the average person if their business fails.

  • You might lose your business and have to go back to working at a job you hate.
  • You might not be able to pay your rent or mortgage and you could end up homeless.
  • You might have to sell your most beloved possessions just to make ends meet.
  • Your spouse or partner might leave you because they can’t take the money problems.
  • You might not be able to take another vacation for many years.
  • You might end up having to beg a charity for money or food.
  • Your children might be made fun of at school for being “poor.”
  • Your children might have to go hungry if you don’t make enough money.
  • Your children might not get anything for their birthday or Christmas.
  • Your spouse or partner might not get anything for birthdays and holidays.
  • You might end up fighting more with your spouse or partner over money issues.

There are many, many bad things that could happen if your business fails. Make a list of the things that scare YOU, and use that as a daily reminder of what might happen if you don’t find a way to motivate yourself to work more. Sometimes fear is the best motivator of all!
