A great way to focus on what you need to do is to use a kitchen timer. Set that going for say two or three hours and stay focused on what you are doing until the alarm sounds. You must focus on the task at hand, with no coffee breaks or anything. This is a powerful time management strategy.
It’s so easy to procrastinate and be distracted with other things; you can find yourself answering emails or surfing the web and being distracted by 1001 other things. At the end of the day it can feel like you’ve worked, but you end up never really achieving anything.
Taking action is the main factor. When your timer is going, it’s important to really concentrate, just focus on your number one task that you’ve got to do. It’s similar to what Stephen King does; he will write 2,500 words a day. A laser targeted, focused action for a set period of time, and the next day he will do the same thing again.
We all have the same 24 hours in the day, and none of us can change that. What we can do is decide how to best use the 24 hours we have. It’s for this reason that time management is one of the most vital skills to develop.
Richard I. Winword said, “Life offers two great gifts - time, and the ability to choose how we spend it. Planning is a process of choosing among those many options. If we do not choose to plan, then we choose to have others plan for us.”
You certainly don’t want others to plan for you; you need to know your own goals, so you can plan your own road to success. If you know what your goals are, you can focus your time on what is truly essential for you. You can then have a daily to-do list that you can prioritize and work through.
Remember to set goals for business and family life. If you only set goals for the parts of your life concerned with business, then these elements can squeeze out time for important family life.
Once you know what you need to do and you are ready to take massive action, don’t forget to set the kitchen timer and focus all your energy to achieving the goals you have set yourself.
