A lot of people suffer from stress in these modern times. The stress you suffer takes a heavy toll on your body, emotions and mind.

Stress is one of the major causes of all illness. Stress can cause migraines, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and many other conditions and diseases.

Here are a few things that can lead to stress:

  • Death and divorce
  • Lack of money
  • Unemployment
  • Exams and deadlines
  • Conflict
  • Heavy drinking
  • Insufficient sleep
  • Lack of control
  • Poor health

When feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a bad day, one of the best things you can do is relax. One way of gaining relaxation is through transcendental meditation. You can also benefit from yoga, listening to tranquil sounds, Tai Chi, aromatherapy or being creative.

Slow, deep breathing offers one of the easiest and quickest methods to relax. Breathing influences almost all aspects of us; it affects our mind and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, and after a short time you can feel its positive effects.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not recommended. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, sounds and images.

Another way to achieve relaxation is through exercise; if you feel irritated a simple half-hour exercise session will often settle things down. Also a body massage is great for relaxation.

Some techniques of time management may help you control stress. In the face of high demands, effective stress management involves learning to set limits and to say “no” to some demands that others make.

Stress results from looking at oneself and one’s circumstances through a mental filter of insecurity, whereas a feeling of happiness results from approaching the world with a quiet mind.

What you need to do when you are in the grip of insecure thinking is to disengage from it, and access your natural positive feelings and this will reduce your stress.

Stress can have a positive influence on your life, and your goal should not be to eliminate all stress, but learn how to manage it. Stress can help compel you to action; it can add anticipation and excitement to your life. We all thrive under a certain amount of stress.

If you had a life free of all stress, you may end up feeling bored or dejected, and become depressed. What you need to do is find the optimal level of stress that will motivate but not overwhelm you.
